Supreme Court Halts Tree Cutting Near Hyderabad Central University: A Victory for Nature
Hyderabad’s Green Lungs Saved—For Now
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India has halted the deforestation of 400 acres near Hyderabad Central University (HCU) in Kancha Gachibowli, Telangana. The apex court’s ruling comes as a relief to environmentalists, students, and concerned citizens who had been protesting the large-scale destruction of the region’s rich biodiversity.
“This is not just about trees—it’s about protecting an entire ecosystem,” said one of the student protestors at HCU.
The Telangana High Court had initially stopped the excavation work, but with heavy machinery already deployed, activists feared irreversible damage. The Supreme Court’s intervention has now brought fresh hope that the region may be permanently protected from industrial expansion.
Why is This Land Important?
The Kancha Gachibowli area is not just a patch of land—it is a thriving ecological habitat that:
✅ Hosts endangered species like the Indian Rock Python, star tortoises, and spotted deer
✅ Contains ancient rock formations like the iconic Mushroom Rock
✅ Includes two lakes that contribute to Hyderabad’s groundwater table
✅ Acts as a natural buffer against flooding and urban heat
If this area were lost to deforestation, Hyderabad would suffer severe environmental consequences, including:
❌ Increased flooding in the city’s financial district
❌ Rise in temperatures due to loss of tree cover
❌ Irreversible damage to wildlife and plant species
Supreme Court’s Stand: “Stop Cutting, Submit a Report”
A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and A.G. Masih issued an interim order on April 3, 2025, directing the Telangana government to immediately stop deforestation in Kancha Gachibowli.
